Ian has an interest in evidence based practice, vital signs and resuscitation science as well as health services evaluation.

Resuscitation:

  • ILCOR CO-Chair for Paediatrics (completed in 2021)
  • ERC Co-Chair for Paediatric SAC (completed in 2021)
  • Chair of the Paediatric Subcommittee Resuscitation Council (2020)
  • Hon Sec Resuscitation Council UK (ongoing)

Publishing:

  • He has published over 300 peer reviewed and reports including the European Guidelines from 2010 and ILCOR COSTR paediatric statements. He has also published extensively about vital signs and on PEWS systems.
  • He has been on the BMJ Hanging committee, deputy EMJ editor, Associate and Deputy Editor Archives of Diseases of Childhood, and is currently on the editorial board of the African Journal of Emergency Medicine and Associate Editor on the BMJ Open Paediatrics Journal.

He has acted as an advisor to the WHO on Paediatric Triage & Emergency care.

Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health: He has held post as Chair of the Trainees Committee, served as a member of the Intercollegiate Group on Services for Children in Emergency departments, he was Officer for Clinical Standards at Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health (RCPCH) 2008-2012, and Registrar to RCPCH (2012- 2017).

Royal College of Emergency Medicine: He sat on the Clinical Effectiveness Committee at the College of Emergency Medicine & the Research & Publication Committee for 5 years.

European Society of Emergency Medicine: He served as Chair of the paediatric section of EuSEM from 2013-2106.

Academic Positions :

  • He has been a visiting professor to Princess Margaret Children's Hospital, Perth, Western Australia,
  • An Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and Research Fellow at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, University of York.
  • He was appointed as the first professor in Paediatric Emergency Medicine in the UK, having received a chair of Professor of Practice at Imperial College, London, UK
